Head teacher’s Weekly Bulletin: Term 1 Week 1, Friday 7th September 2018

Posted 10/9/2018

Welcome Back

Welcome to the first newsletter of the new academic year. On behalf of the whole school team, I am delighted to officially welcome everyone back to school.

We hope you have had a great summer break and enjoyed some quality time together with loved ones, whether home or abroad.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome some new families to Carlton in Snaith Community Primary School, both to families with children joining in our Reception class (this week and next) and in older year groups too. We’ve had quite a few new starters in school this week and they’ve already made a good impression with their smiles, enthusiasm and good attitudes.  The new housing estate will likely mean we will be welcoming new pupils regularly throughout the year ahead.

Official welcome to Mrs Burton and Miss Watling to the team this week. Welcome aboard! A heartfelt welcome back to Mrs Pierce who returns from her absence – it’s great to have her energy and positivity back in school!

We are also delighted to hear about and see some of our former Y6 pupils popping back into school this week following their positive starts to Year 7, both at Holy Family and the Snaith School. We wish them well in their new chapter!

Our first group of Reception new starters began their time at Carlton in Snaith CPS this week too. They have been friendly, positive, and enthusiastic. The rest of the intake begins next Monday – we look forward to them joining the team too!

Premises:

Over the last 6 months, as you know, we have had major positive development to our building and learning environment with our canopy for the Reception class, and development of collaboration corner. We are delighted that over the summer, working in close conjunction with NYCC team, we have greatly improved the front of school. We now have a high quality disabled access toilet and changing facility, as well as greatly improved office area. We hope you like the improvements!

THANK YOU

I am very proud of the children and their efforts at the start of term. Change of classroom, end of summer, starting a new routine etc. can be challenging but the first week has been extremely successful. The atmosphere has been calm, productive and enthusiastic. Long may that continue! Well done everyone. I am also really pleased with the manner in which the staff team have ensured it has been a really great start to the term, with children settling into their new classes and classrooms quickly.

Carlton Skill Set

We have launched our Carlton Skill Set this term and had 8 superhero characters designed to represent 8 vital skills we want our pupils to develop. We are thrilled with the visual prompts for the superheroes that are displayed in the school hall and in each classroom. We hope the children and you love them as much as we do.

We will be using and promoting the skills in all aspects of the curriculum, and all ‘Special Mentions’ certificates will be tied into one of these skills.

Marvellous me

You will be receiving a letter very soon with details of our new ‘Marvellous Me’ system. This will provide you with the opportunity to download a free app for your mobile device and keep in touch with the positive news and achievement of your child in school.  We are excited about using the highly recommended system as a further way of involving you in the children’s learning, attitude, participation and achievements in school.  Class teachers will be rewarding children with ‘awards’ in class, which you then will get notification about via the app.  We again hope you find this to be really positive. Our Carlton Skills set is also linked to this easy to use app.

Dates for the diary!

Before the summer we advertised on the newsletter that we would be having a ‘meet the Teacher event at the start of term. After some consideration I have decided to change the format and style this year and to have a ‘meet the parent’ session instead.

On Tuesday 18th September we will be inviting parents to sign up for a 5 minute time slot to tell us anything you want us to know about your child. We will be offering you the chance to complete this on paper as an alternative too. More details to follow.

Costume alert! To help launch our Carlton Skill set super heroes we will be having a Super hero dressing up day on Friday 21st September. Children will be encouraged to wear a superhero costume – this can be as simple or creative as you like. We suggest that children could come as either a famous superhero, one of 8 Carlton Skill set superheroes (or versions of our superheroes) or superhero of their own creation!

We have once again booked the Whole School Pantomime trip to Doncaster Cast Theatre – this year we are seeing Robin Hood on Wednesday 19th December.  This will be the third year in a row we have attended a have had a whole school festive panto trip and I’m sure this years will be another super day for the children. We will be sending you a letter about this trip and payment details next week.

Further diary dates to follow next week.

Special mentions

I just wanted to remind everyone about arrangements for Special mentions and Celebration assemblies. We hold our special mention assemblies every fortnight on a Friday afternoon, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Invitations will be sent out for all children who are due to receive a special mention. If you can’t make that date and can come a fortnight later then let us know and we will ‘roll it over’! You could always see if another family member can come along if you would prefer. Our first Special mention assembly is next Friday (15th September).

Other important information:

  • PLEASE ensure all children have their names in all of their school uniform.

  • A reminder that Tuesday 18th September is Meet the Teacher event in school - Arrival at 5.15 for a 5.30 start, 6.00pm finish.  Like last year, we have planned this event as an informal and positive way to start the school year. Parents are invited to join their child’s class teacher for a short talk and presentation. We aim to outline key information about the school year and explain other important routines and systems etc.  Similar information will be shared by all teachers so if you have more than one child and only one parent can attend, then you won’t be missing out. We hope you can join us.

  • Clubs will start late in the term and you will informed about these in due course. However we have our externally run clubs starting sooner – Doncaster Rovers will be on Tuesday after school (starting Tuesday 18th September for Y3-Y6/KS2). We are also hosting Magical Maths this term for the first time. It is not too late to sign up. For further information please contact us or see the banner outside the KS1 playground should you wish to sign up.

  • Mrs Gay will be running her Forest School sessions with children each afternoon across the whole year. Children who are participating for the 6-8 week programme will receive a letter for you to give consent.
